Doug,
Thanks for introducing us to Visual Frameworks. I have not read on them, yet. Thanks for the pointers to the relevant books.
I took a look at the visualcomplexity.com examples and the images struck me as... complex. My first reaction was that they demand too much attention to themselves rather than the problem they represent. If I were a new member of one of these teams and they point me to one of these images as a visualization of the problem they're trying to solve I would need some serious time and hand holding to grokk it.
On the other hand, you have used this technology and it seems it works for you. What's your experience been with new team members? Does it help them come up to speed faster? What are the benefits that you've seen in practice? An alternative is to use simple pictures to illustrate even complex problems.
Next time you're at a bookstore, leaf over Unfolding the Napkin by Dan Roam. This is a follow up to his book The Back of the Napkin—Solving Problems and Selling Ideas with Pictures. I've written a short review of "Unfolding the Napkin" in my blog if you're interested.
